Welcome to Thanks Day!

World Day for Single Parent Families & Friends

We give single parent families time & space.

Time:
Establishment of the International Day on May 14 - one day before the International Day of Family.

Space: Global platform that makes single parent families and their organizations visible.

In the summer of 2021, we started with an international Online Summit. It was important to start a conversation for the first time.

The time that followed was characterized by networking on a structural level: Hollywood stars and media partners were quickly found. Unfortunately, the Facebook account was hacked from Russia, which prevented the distribution of the first summit (until March 8, 2024), the sponsor hunt was accordingly unsuccessful and everything was on hold. But NOW:

The second THANKS Summit will soon go online and the first THANKS Gala will take place on May 14, 2024! Info will follow... stay tuned!

  • Präamble

The world is in a state of upheaval. The corona crisis highlighted social injustices and exacerbated them. Inflation, inflation and the flight of women and children are consequences of the war in Ukraine. The threat of climate collapse has yet to be averted. All this places us in a historical and global caesura.

The crises affect us all. The full force of the additional burdens and financial hardships hits single parents and their children.

Structural failures of the past and present often exclude them from social life. We are going to change that now.

We want a future in which all forms of family are appreciated and recognised.

We want a future in which all children, regardless of their parents' relationship status, have equal opportunities.

We want a future with acknowledgement, awareness and appreciation for single parents and their children.

Anyone who recognizes the signs of the times knows:

It is time to acknowledge performance. The historical injustices that many single parents still face today are out of all proportion to their daily achievements.

It is time to rethink social goals. Compassion and a sense of responsibility must be strengthened and coordinated action must be taken.

It's time for a good life for everyone. Widespread poverty in single-parent households is a no go. We no longer accept child poverty. Neither in the poor nor in the rich countries of the world.

It's time to say thank you.

Thank you - single parents. All too often you struggle with poverty, overwork and isolation. Still you give everything to provide a good life for your children. Lovingly, thoughtfully and persistently.

Thank you - children of single parents. Your start in life is often no child's play. Nevertheless, you look courageously into the future.

Thank you - ex-partners for making an effort to treat the other parent with respect and for doing everything in your power to make your financial contribution.

Thank you - grandparents, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews for sharing the often difficult situation of some family members.

Thank you – teachers for being respectful of your students who are dealing with separation or divorce and are often affected by child poverty. You integrate them into the class, encourage them and make allowances when money is not paid into the class fund.

Thank you - employers for appreciating the qualities of single parents. Besides responsibility, efficient focus on the essentials and multitasking, you rely on their courage and the black humor they need most days.

Thank you - aid organizations for helping where the law fails. You are a reliable contact point for single parents and their children, even when you are short of money.

Thank you - experts for collecting all the necessary information to clearly communicate the benefits of a good life for everyone, including single parents and their children.

Thank you - journalists for not getting tired of reporting about social and political grievances, especially when it comes to poverty and isolation of single parents and their children. Because both are unacceptable.

Thank you - politicians for fighting, beyond party interests, for laws that permanently abolish the isolation of single parents and child poverty. Primarily because it is time and only then, because you want to be re-elected.

  • History

    History of THANKS DAY

I was a happily divorced mother of three children. Until I stopped receiving child support and fell into poverty with them for 1.5 years. This was due to a loophole in the Austrian Maintenance Act. I became a political activist to close this loophole.

I founded an association, launched a petition, met with representatives of NGOS, from whom I learned a lot, and politicians from (almost) all parties. I stood in front of parliament with my sign for an hour every week, sang, spoke and published on the topic, organized demos and was eventually invited to talk shows.

When none of this helped, I ran for political office in 2017 and, during the election campaign, made child poverty in single-parent households a political issue that no one has been able to avoid since. A year later, I was head of the parliamentary party Jetzt.

On 14 May 2019, I initiated the first European Day of Single Parents in cooperation with organizations and politicians: a rally, press conference and panel discussion. Organizations from Germany, France, Croatia and Italy were on board.

After leaving politics, I founded the THANKS DAY - World Day for Single Families & Friends association during the pandemic. As I had coronavirus on May 14, I put the first THANKS Summit online in June 2021. I interviewed organizations from Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, France, Croatia, Uganda, Japan and Australia. The first international summit for single parents.

The time that followed was characterized by networking on a structural level: Hollywood stars and media partners were quickly found. Unfortunately, the 2021 Facebook account was hacked from Russia, which prevented the first summit from being broadcast (until March 8, 2024). The hunt for sponsors was accordingly unsuccessful and everything was put on hold.

Until the Austrian Ministry of Social Affairs agreed to fund the second THANKS Summit in 2024 and the first THANKS Gala, which will take place on May 14, 2024. Unfortunately, the sponsor of the star went to the Akademikerball and I had to cancel Hollywood for this year. No matter, there will be a next year and hopefully other sponsors...
